BEITBRIDGE – A Beitbridge Town Council Ford Ranger driven by the local authority’s Finance Director Anymore Mbedzi, hit and killed a pedestrian who was crossing Beitbridge Highway in the border town last night.
The Mirror has confirmed from sources who were at the scene that Wonder Masokisi was crossing the road near Total Service Station when the council vehicle which is said to have been speeding approached from the direction of an intersection of Masvingo and Bulawayo Highways towards Beitbridge town.
Sources said Masokisi was sent flying after he was hit by the car and he fell hard on the ground. He died on the spot although eyewitnesses said there were no signs of bleeding. A close relative who spoke on condition of anonymity said Masokisi will be buried in Bikita.
Eyewitnesses also said that there was little damage to the council vehicle. The incident happened near Total Service Station.
Mbedzi confirmed the incident to the Mirror and asked the reporter to call back after 30 minutes but he was no longer picking his phone.
“Please call me after 30 minutes there is a crowd here,” said Mbedzi.
Matebeleland South Police Spokesperson Inspector Loveness Mangena referred questions to National Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi who referred the reporter to a ZRP twitter handle. However, there was no report on the handle and efforts to get back to him were futile as he no longer answered his calls.
