CHIREDZI – A suspected pick-pocket who allegedly stole a purse with only US$5 died at Chiredzi Police Station after he was caught and battered by a mob.
The deceased’s uncle Ezekiel Chipudzuri confirmed the death to The Mirror.
Masvingo Police spokesperson, Kudakwashe Dhewa said he had no such report.
Sources alleged that Jaya snatched a purse from an unidentified woman near the intersection of Zaka – Chiredzi Road and Chiredzi -Buffalo Range and ran away towards the town centre.
The woman whose purse was stolen later boarded a commuter omnibus and as she got into town she allegedly noticed Jaya and raised alarm.
People disembarked from the Kombi and got hold of Jaya, allegedly recovered the purse before meeting out instant justice. They then took him to the Police station where he was held in Police cells where he is said to have died.
Chipudzuri was disheartened that his relative died because of $5.
“We have not recovered from the shock and we hope the Police are going to do their job to ensure justice,” said Chipudzuri.https://masvingomirror.com/
