Mpandawana – The Baptist Church which has been inundated by orphans seeking shelter has started constructing an orphanage at Makanda Village some 8km from Mpandawana under headman Gadzingo.

The Baptist Pastor, Simon Maponga confirmed the project in an interview with The Mirror. Pastor Maponga said his wife is also going to play a role in the orphanage.

He said that the church has been receiving a lot of needy children and they referred them to Harare or Chikombedzi. However, the situation has forced them to register an orphanage with the Department of Social Welfare and construction work has since started.

“Currently we are sending the children to Harare or Chikombedzi if they have space.

“We are currently staying with four children. Some have been given to church congregants who are foster parents. We have realised that there is need for safe accommodation and a bigger and better place so an orphanage is ideal,” he said.

Rodrick Nyamande, one of the foster parents said they have already put a foundation for a 10 bedroomed house at the orphanage and there are plans to drill a borehole.

Nyamande said they are appealing for sponsorship for the project. He said all the paperwork is done with Gutu Rural District Council and Senator Lovemore Matuke promised to look for donors.
