Artuz leader granted bail after spending 15 days in jail

MASVINGO –Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) Masvingo gender secretary Sheila Chirisamhuru (53) has been granted bail at the High Court after staying in jail for 15 days.

The bail was granted by Justice Neville Wamambo at the High Court in Masvingo today thereby revoking her 16 months jail term given by Magistrate Mbonisi Ndlovu on December 21, 2020.

Chirisamhuru was jailed for public violence and disorderly conduct after raising a placard that demanded that Government reinstates teachers’ salaries of US$540 per month.

The protest was held in June 2020 at the District Schools Inspectors (DSI) offices in Mucheke.

Chirisamhuru was represented by Martin Mureri from Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR).

“Justice Wamambo gave her bail after noting that her prospects for a better sentence or acquittal on appeal are high,” said Mureri.
