Another 66 illegal settlers appear in court today

MASVINGO – Masvingo Provincial Magistrate Farai Gwitima today granted ZWL$100 000 bail each to 66 people who are illegally settled in the Lake Mtirikwi Basin.

The accused who are from five different villages namely Muza village, Sithole, Banga, Makasva and Manunure under Chief Mugabe were arrested yesterday.

They are charged with Contravening Section 56 (20) of the Water Act Chapter 20:24 Settling With in Prohibited Dam Basin.

The court heard that on January 22,2024, Sarah Chimoto (57), Ratison Haruziviishe (54), Chipo Chimoto (38), Mazvipesa Njaravani (46), Nyaradzo Nyamande, Loveletter Manyere, Isaac Muwani, Mercy Kwangwari, Tandi Sibanda, Clever Mapfumo, Moreblessing Dekete, Abigail Mutadzi, Stembile Chinuwo, Vorina Kwashi, Esnath Hora, Chipo Vhovha, Darliwe Chikati, Rosemary Sokobhishi, Laiza Masukume, Lona Madongorere, Nyengeterai Chabhara, Pelagia Nyeruka, Tracy Chivamba, Riftan Mashindi, Moderstar Dziva, Agnes Nematadzira, Loveness Chikondo, Melody Nyanga, Lewice Mutikani, Monica Ringirai, Emaculate Magarira, Fatima Chihwani, Nelson Charambira, Prince Mangeya, Darikai Matongo, Osten Mashava, Lameck Mutambu, Netsai Chamisa, Peter Chimoto and 21others  were arrested for illegally occupying the land in Lake Mtirikwi basin since the year 2000.

The matter was postponed to January 29, 2024, for trial.
