MASVINGO – All roads lead to Gokomere Mission this Saturday as the Roman Catholic Church installs the second bishop for Masvingo Diocese.

The Right Reverend Bishop Raymond Tapiwa Mupandasekwa is being installed and thousands are expected to attend the event, the Diocese’s Vicar General Fr Samson Mutsvanga told The Mirror in an interview.

Bishop Mupandasekwa became the second bishop of Masvingo after the diocese was established on 9 February 1999. Rt Rev Michael Dickson Bhasera was the first bishop and he headed the diocese until 19 July 2022 when Archbishop Robert Christopher Ndlovu took over on a caretaker basis.

“As the Catholic Diocese of Masvingo, we are happy as we prepare for the installation of our new shepherd, the Right Reverend Bishop Mupandasekwa.

“We are grateful and indebted to Bishop Emeritus Michael Dickson Bhasera the founding Bishop of the Diocese. We worked well with him,” said Fr Mutsvanga.

Rt. Reverend Mupandasekwa was consecrated as the third Bishop of Chinhoyi Diocese on April 7, 2018. He held the position until September 15, 2023 when Pope Francis appointed him as the Masvingo Diocese head.

The Masvingo born bishop also serves as the vice president of the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops Conference (ZCBC) and ZCBC chairman for the Seminary Commission and a Seminary Board member.

He was born at Tamirepi Village, Chief Mapanzure in Masvingo on April 28, 1970. He enrolled for his philosophical studies at the Major Seminary of Chishawasha in Harare.

Bishop Mupandasekwa joined the religious family of the Redemptorists in 1996 and made his perpetual vows in 2001. He was ordained a priest in Hatcliffe, Harare on August 4, the same year.
