61% teachers not attending lessons in Masvingo

MASVINGO – Sixty nine percent of the teachers in Masvingo are not attending lessons due to incapacitation, the Minister of State for Masvingo, Ezra Chadzamira has been told.

This leaves thousands of pupils across the province at the risk of contracting Covid-19 because of the uncontrolled gatherings.

There is also the issue of vices which include child sex, drug abuse and physical fights which threaten to tear away our social fabric.

Chadzamira was told this during a Covid-19 provincial taskforce meeting held at the Great Zimbabwe University Law School in Masvingo on Sunday.

He was appraised of the statistics in a discussion around two Grade 7 pupils who tested positive to Covid-19 at Rujeko and Shakashe primary school in the city on Thursday last week.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Mines and Mining Development Winston Chitando, Provincial Development Coordinator (PDC) Dr. Jefter Sakupwanya, service chiefs, council CEO’s, District Development Coordinators (DDC’s) and Government department heads.

Masvingo has 17 000 teachers and this means of those, 12 000 are not attending lessons.

“Out teacher school attendance ratio is at 39% and pupils are spending the day unattended,” said a member of the taskforce.

Provincial Medical Director (PMD) Dr Amadeus Shamu said his department conducted 12 random tests on teachers and classmates of the two pupils who all tested negative. https://masvingomirror.com
