Shurugwi – There were skirmishes at Tebekwe Mine owned by land baron Smelly Dube in Shurugwi on Wednesday when about 50 Zanu PF youth armed with iron bars and machetes invaded the operation with the intention of taking it over.

Sources told The Mirror that the youth were led by councilor William Zhowake from Shurugwi North.

Efforts to get a comment from Councillor Zhowake were futile.

Shurugwi District Development Co-ordinator, Langton Mupeta confirmed the incident and said that the youth will face the full wrath of the law. He said it was wrong for them to demonstrate at the mine in violation of Covid-19 lockdown rules.

Mine manager Thamasanqa Maseko said that the youth who were armed with iron bars and machetes ordered workers to stop the mill from running because they had taken over the place.

“They were about 50, armed youth with iron bars and machetes and they were singing Chimurenga songs. They allegedly disarmed security guards and handcuffed one.

One of the security guards was allegedly stabbed on the ear with a sharp object and he is admitted at Shurugwi District Hospital.

Police is said to have swiftly responded to the fracas and arrested 10 youth. https://masvingomirror.com
