CHIREDZI – Four illegal gold miners were trapped and three of them died at a shaft at Chemhute Amethyst Open Cast Mine in Chiredzi on Friday.
The incident happened at around 10pm when the four sneaked into the mine.
Masvingo Assistant Police spokesperson Lorraine Ndhlovu confirmed the incident to The Mirror.
Sources said that Ephious Chauke (25) of Tsumele village, Chief Mpapa area in Chikombedzi, Abious Venganai (23) of Bodzi Village, Chief Gezani, Trust Makiwa (26) of Mateke village, Rutsva, Chief Chitanga and Gainmore Musisinyani (19) connived and went to Chemhute Mine, which is an open cast mine of between 8 and 10 metres-depth.
The mine collapsed just after they had entered and Musisinyani’s head was left above the rubble while the rest were buried inside.
Musisinyani screamed and attracted the attention of a security guard, Stephen Selemani who ran to check. Selemani went and looked for help and the rescuers only managed to retrieve Musisinyani while the other three were found dead.
Musisinyani was later taken to Chikombedzi hospital whilst the bodies of the trio were handed over to their relatives for burial.https://www.masvingomirror.com
