GWERU – Twenty-four candidates including acting town clerk Livingstone Churu have applied to fill the Gweru City Town Clerk post that fell vacant in 2019.
Mayor Martin Chivhoko told The Mirror that submissions of curriculum vitae closed last Monday.
“We are happy that we are going to have a new town clerk after 24 potential candidates applied for the post.

“The local authority will soon conduct interviews to select a suitable and qualified individual to take up the esteemed role,” he said.
Gweru City’s last substantive Town Clerk Elizabeth Gwatipedza was dismissed after being found guilty of disobeying a lawful order and gross incompetence in 2019.
Former Chamber Secretary Vakai Chikwekwe was appointed acting town clerk. He resigned in July this year after corruption allegations.

City Finance Director Livingstone Churu took over and he resigned recently after applying for a substantive post.
Efforts to get a comment from Churu were futile as his mobile phone could not be reached at the time of going to press.

Chivhoko recently told a Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association (GRRA) organised engagement that the local authority would not hesitate to dismiss underperforming staff.
“If we appoint a town clerk and the incumbent does not perform, we will dismiss that person and appoint another until we have the best candidate,” he said.
