210 hours for stealing Presidential inputs
MASHAVA– Masvingo Criminal Investigation Department (CID), on Tuesday arrested, Munyaradzi Timire, (41) of Shashe Village under Chief Bere in Mashava for the theft of Presidential agricultural inputs valued at US$1035. His actions disadvantaged bona fide farmers who were set to benefit from the programme.
According to a Press Statement by Acting Provincial Community Relations Liaison Officer Detective Assistant Inspector, Rachael Muteweri, he was arrested on January 24, 2023, after the police received a tip off that Timire who was on his way to Masvingo from Mashava was in possession of herbicides, insecticides and pesticides which were acquired through the Presidential inputs Scheme.
Investigations revealed that the accused person who was employed as a co-ordinator by Cotton Company of Zimbabwe (COTTCO) under Summertime area in Mashava was the custodian of the inputs and was mandated to distribute them to farmers in the neighborhood.
“A search was conducted which led to the recovery of 30 x 1 liter hoover herbicides, 41 x 500 ml Fenvelarate, 2 x 250 ml Abamectin, 1 x 250 ml Amitraz, 12 x 1 liter shock wave for crop protection, 12 x 1 liter cottopro and 203 x 50 grams Acetampriol insecticide leading to the arrest of the accused person.
“Timire appeared before Magistrate Phillip Makondo at Masvingo Magistrate Court, and was sentenced to nine months of which three months were suspended on condition of good behavior while the remaining six months were suspended on condition that he performs 210 hours of community service at Zvamahande Primary School.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police expressed it’s gratitude to members of the public for their concerted efforts in fighting crime,” read the statement.
