20 miners initially feared dead in Hwandara Mine accident

Shurugwi – An accident at Hwandara Mine in Shurugwi today sent rescue teams into a frenzy of activity with 20 miners feared dead.
Reports received by The Mirror as the rescue operation progressed however, indicated that 10 miners were retrieved alive while one is dead and two are still missing.
The report is that Makudo Mine collapsed .
Hwandara was closed in March following its sale to Chengxi Mining Company understood to be owned by Collins Mungangwa and a Chines national.
The District Development Coordinator and Officer Commanding Province were present during the rescue process.
Nicholars Gara, a prominent miner confirmed the incident to The Mirror and said he was financially supporting miners in retrieving their colleagues.
” I can confirm that 10 miners have been retrieved in this mine and one has been pronounced dead. It is suspected that there two miners missing,” said Gara.
