2 Gokwe men jailed 10 years for stealing copper cables



GOKWE – Two Gokwe men will spend the next 10 and a half years in jail after Magistrate Grace Tupiri convicted and sentenced them for stealing copper cables and diesel worth US$6 000 from an Econet Wireless network booster.
Cavie Hamadziripi (37) and Nyasha Madondo (34) both of Sanyati Industrial Area, Arda Compound were convicted after a full trial.
The duo faced a litany of charges and most were withdrawn by the State.
Hamadziripi and Madondo were convicted of contravening The Postal and Telecommunications Act and contravening The Electricity Act.
The incident happened on October 11, 2023.
Circumstances are that the duo hired a Nissan Caravan and Toyota Hiace belonging to Takudzwa Imbayarwo and Jabulani Nyathi respectively.
They went to Econet Wireless’s Kuwirirana network booster in Gokwe were they ordered the drivers of the two vehicles to remain close as they went to strip the booster.
The duo cut four copper cables, stole 12 meters of copper cable, 15 meters direct current copper cables and three small copper transformers. They also drained 300 litres of diesel from a tank and left.
Econet Wireless represented by Ndumiso Shoko and Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (Zetdc) represented by Irene Togara filed Police reports.
Investigations led to the arrest of the duo.
The stolen property is valued at US$6 000 and US$2 223 worth of property was recovered.
