CHIREDZI – More than 2 060 girls dropped out of school in Chiredzi in 2023, a masterplan research commissioned by Chiredzi Rural District has established.
The report attributed the dropouts to long distances of up to 20km that pupils particularly in secondary walk to the nearest school and called for the construction of more places of learning.
The report also said that there were 1 860 boys who dropped out of school during the same period. The masterplan work is now 60% complete.
Chiredzi lead master planner, Aaron Mabaso confirmed the statistics to The Mirror.
“One key example is ward 13 where pupils walk 20km to the nearest secondary school. Pupils from areas like Masukwe and Pahlela attend school at Alpha Mpapa in Chikombedzi and Malipati High, some 20km away,” said Mabaso.
The long distances have forced pupils to rent accommodation in villages near the school where they stay without parental guidance. He said that such environments are particularly negative to girls.
He also said that this distance also affect quality of learning and hence lead to school drop outs.
Chiredzi district have a total of 148 primary schools (93 registered and 55 satellite, 48 secondary schools(28 registered and 20 satellite schools) and only one boarding school, Malipati.
