CHIREDZI – Ten siblings from Chauke family of Mukungulushi Village, Headman Chilonga in Chiredzi were remanded in custody last week for allegedly kidnapping and holding hostage their stepmother for 23 hours.
The siblings had differences with their father who they accused of bewitching them. The father ran away and the siblings turned on their stepmother, Faith Gwisai (48) and demanded information on the whereabouts of their father.
When she professed ignorance, they abducted Gwisai and her three children and locked them away in a room.
The siblings are Margret Chauke (42), Chiedza Chauke (37), Etina Chauke (34), Gertrude Chauke (32), Tafara Chauke (30), Proud Chauke (28), Regina Chauke (27) Samuel Chauke (26) Robert Chauke (22) and Beatrice Chaukea (20).
The State said that on June 28, 2022, the 10 went to their father, Elias Chauke’s homestead in the same village and threatened to kill him for bewitching them.
Chauke fled the scene leaving Gwisai and her three kids.
Gwisai managed to escape the following day and walked 5km to a nearby village where she sought refuge at a Policeman’s house.
She later made a report at Chambuta Police Station.
